(From: Autosport, 22 February 1990) After recent separate tests, both Goodyear and Pirelli runners came together at Jerez last week (February 14 @ 18) for one of the last major test sessions of the winter. Ten teams attended with just three weeks to go before the opening Grand Prix of the season in Phoenix, on March 11… And the weather could not have been better. The session started with blue skies and warm sunshine very similar to the conditions the teams can expect for the opening race in the Arizona desert. The Larrousse-Lola team brought along two cars for Éric Bernard and Aguri Suzuki. However, the drivers ended up sharing one car for most of the test. The other chassis had just been finished and was taken to Jerez for a simple shakedown test before Phoenix. The car remains very similar to last year’s chassis, the aerodynamics having been tidied up and the monocoque modified to take extra fuel for the thirsty Lamborghini V12. Most of the winter development has been concentrated on the engine to improve power and reliability. Lamborghini seems to have done a good job, for other than some transmission problems the engine proved very reliable. Swiss engine builder Heini Mader has been brought in to help service the Lamborghini engines this year now that two teams will be running them. Designer Gerard Ducarouge is confident that Lola will make good progress in 1990. Eric Bernard was one of seven drivers to better Senna’s 1989 pole with a best of 1m19.58s, while his team mate Suzuki was settling in well with his new team setting times which were a couple of seconds slower than the Frenchman. 1.
