TIPS TO HELP GROW AS AN ARTIST First and foremost, if you entered the contest solely as a means of expressing yourself, then that's a good thing. Winning isn't everything, especially if your goal was just to be a part of the experience. If 10,000 people run a marathon, 9,950 will not win because there are only 50 prizes. That doesn't stop people from challenging themselves to have that new and memorable experience. For those of you who did enter to win, here are a few tips: #1 -- If you are serious about anything, you have to devote time to it. Even naturally gifted and talented people have to work to perfect their craft. #2 -- Invest in your future. Whether it is home video, audio, or lighting equipment, it's really not all that expensive to invest a little bit more in the quality of your productions. If two people are shooting for the stars, the person with the bigger rocket is likely to go further. #3 -- We all have music inside us. Seriously ask yourself whether expressing that music inside you through the use of your voice draws an audience. The hard truth is -- the rapping or singing voice isn't everyone's natural instrument. Your voice may be better suited for teaching, lecturing, narrating, acting, auctioneering, or telling jokes. Your natural instrument may be the violin, the piano, the guitar, or the turn-tables. Some people step and tap-dance as a means of making music. Araab Music is famous for using the MPC beat-machine to make music. No matter how good you think you are, large audiences will not "feel" you if you are using your vocal instrument improperly. #4 -- Never stumble over the beat or force words to fit the tempo. If it doesn't fit, the song will sound like ________. You fill in the blank. Your voice is an instrument that becomes part of the song. When you're off, the listener can tell. You must change the arrangement of the song to fit the beat. #5 -- Only talk over the beat if you're doing a parody or trying to be funny. Otherwise, your voice should have a melodic tone and musical quality to it. I saw some really entertaining videos where people just talked. Those videos didn't win (obviously), but they were very entertaining. Those entrants knew they couldn't sing or rap and didn't try. They used their voices the way they were made to be used and won a small victory, because most people who watched their videos were entertained anyway. #6 -- Do your research. If a guy's name is Day-Storm and you call him Dee-Storm, you probably haven't done your homework. #7 -- The well-rounded man or woman can roll in any direction. Some people don't know it, but DeStorm is a professional personal trainer and a remarkable portrait artist. He could make money in either of those professions if he desired to do so. God doesn't give any of us just one gift or talent. So, develop the courage to explore different things you're passionate about. #8 -- Try watching a few pages of video entries yourself. See what you think works, what doesn't, and why. I'm certain you'll learn a few things for the next contest. #9 -- Staying on subject is key in a contest? lots of entries weren't on the same subject matter as the original piece.
