Mount Lawu is a sacred stratovolcano located on the border of Central Java and East Java in Indonesia. Rising to 10,712 feet above sea level, it's revered in Javanese culture and houses important temples like Ceto and Sukuh. First stop today, we're taking you on a journey to the enchanting Ceto Temple nestled on the slopes of Mount Lawu. To reach Ceto Temple, visitors usually hike a short distance from the parking area, making the journey part of the adventure. Arriving at the temple parking we were instructed to wear sarongs. People wear sarongs when visiting temples in Indonesia, to show cultural respect, modesty, and reverence. Sarongs are traditional attire with spiritual significance, symbolizing purity. They also align with dress codes and traditions, and their practicality and comfort make them suitable for the local climate.is a hidden gem dating back to the 15th century. The Ceto Temple boasts a unique architectural style, blending Hindu and Javanese influences. Its main structure resembles a step pyramid adorned with intricate carvings and sculptures depicting Hindu mythology and Javanese folklore. Ceto Temple was originally dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva, and it may have also served as a place of meditation and spiritual retreat. The temple complex includes several terraces and smaller shrines. Ceto Temple is believed to have been built in the 1460s, making it one of the last significant Hindu temples constructed in Java before the spread of Islam in the region.
