Here’s a look inside the Subaru FB25 engine and how it works! The FB series of Subaru engines replaced the ever so popular EJ series of engines around 2010. Namely improvements included stronger construction, dual variable valve timing (on some models), and a timing chain instead of a timing belt. Oh and yeah, not as many head gasket failures as the older EJ series! However, they don’t come without their issues. Oil consumption plagued earlier models due to low tension oil rings. Valve springs were known to break and if not caught early enough through a ticking sound or a misfire in the engine, could cause catastrophic damage, which is what occurred in this engine. The engine in this video was from a 2013 Subaru Forester. The valve spring broke, causing the valve to drop onto the piston. The piston struck the valve upon impact, causing the valves to bend and break. Repairing an engine like this would likely mean a rebuild, since both the piston and head where damaged.
