About Course: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive and fatal motor neuron disease characterized by the gradual loss of voluntary muscle movement. Malnutrition is a prognostic indicator for survival in ALS, compounding disease-related muscle mass loss. However, many barriers exist to consuming adequate calories and protein by mouth. If in line with goals of care, gastrostomy tubes (G-tubes) and enteral nutrition (EN) are recommended when nutrition needs cannot be met orally. Whole food feeding formulas have been associated with clinical benefit, including increased gastrointestinal tolerance. This webinar will review the role of nutrition in the ALS disease progression and how whole food enteral formulas can be incorporated into the nutrition regimens of people with ALS. What Will You Learn? • Describe the disease process of ALS and its impact on nutrition • Navigate enteral nutrition challenges in the ALS population • List ways to incorporate whole foods into the nutrition regimen of people with ALS
