These weren't primitive beauty practices that modern products improved upon—these were sophisticated techniques that Black women developed, refined, and passed down through generations, creating beauty rituals that were deeply effective and culturally specific. This video documents eight specific beauty practices that Black women used before modern products existed, examining why each one worked, how it was done, what cultural knowledge it represented, and why some of these traditional methods were actually superior to the expensive products marketed to Black women today. Seventh, Black women practiced protective styling decades before it had a name, understanding that manipulating Black hair less frequently allowed it to retain length and stay healthy. Eighth, Black women made their own hair oils and treatments in their kitchens, blending ingredients based on recipes passed down through generations. These practices weren't primitive solutions, they were sophisticated techniques representing a body of beauty knowledge that was culturally specific, highly effective, and deeply rooted in Black women's relationships with their mothers and grandmothers. Black women developed these practices because the mainstream beauty industry ignored them, but in creating solutions, they built knowledge that was remarkably advanced. What Black women in the 1970s understood is that beauty isn't about having the most products or spending the most money, it's about understanding your own features, knowing what works through experience and generational wisdom, and having skill to use simple tools effectively.
