EAST RIDING OF YORKSHIRE PARISH #119: SKIRLAUGH Skirlaugh truly is a wonderful village. I loved this one because it reminded me of home. It’s situated approximately 7 miles northeast of Hull city centre, bang on the A165 road. Originally a farming community, it’s now primarily a commuter village for Hull. Skirlaugh was formerly two separate settlements named North Skirlaugh and South Skirlaugh, the division between the two being a watercourse called Lambwath Stream. The western part of North Skirlaugh previously was in the parish of Swine, and it is thought that the stream which runs north - south, crossing Vicarage Lane to reach the Lambwath formed its boundary. The rest of North Skirlaugh was part of the ancient parishes of Long Riston and Rise. So how about that name then? Well, "Skirlaugh" is of Anglo Scandinavian origin, and it means "Bright clearing". Much like Bilton, Skirlaugh has seen some 20th century expansion, particularly to the West of the main road. Among the notable people to have lived in this village would be Walter de Skirlaw – a former Bishop of Durham and adviser to both King Richard II and Henry IV. He’s the man responsible for the village’s church. He was later joined on that list by the early 19th century historian John Bigland, who spent his later years in Finningley in Doncaster. It’s a fun one this. In short, don’t laugh – you’ll be saying it wrong.
