Q&A WITH DR. ALEX FACQUE: Breast Augmentation Recovery: What can I expect? (Part 1/2) Breast augmentation can transform your physical appearance & increase your self-esteem & confidence in your body! Gender-affirming breast augmentation enlarges or constructs breasts, usually through implants or liposuction-fat grafting. Trans & non-binary patients often have different needs than cis women. For example, implant size/type/placement considerations may be necessary due to common anatomical factors (chest width, space between nipples, etc.). We encourage patients to consider board-certified surgeons who specialize in working with trans patients. It is helpful to remind yourself that there will typically be ups and downs during recovery from your breast augmentation top surgery. Bruising, swelling, & some physical discomfort are common during initial stages of recovery & may temporarily affect breast sensation. These effects will gradually dissipate over a few weeks. Once the nerves have fully recovered, the sensation in most patients’ breasts should return. The level of discomfort will depend on where implants are placed. If implants are placed on top of the chest muscle, pain will subside quicker (in about a day) than if they are placed under the chest muscle (a few days). The risk of permanent nipple numbness is about 10-15%. It is important to carefully consider the possibility of permanent nipple numbness, in case that is an outcome you are not comfortable with. Increased nipple sensation, or “hypersensitivity,” is also possible following breast augmentation & may be uncomfortable. This is almost always temporary & usually resolves on its own within a few weeks. Most patients require at least a week of rest before resuming work & other low impact activities. Rigorous physical activities should be restricted for about six weeks, or until your surgeon tells you that you are cleared. Heavy lifting should be very restricted during the first three weeks of your recovery. You should also avoid lifting your arms above your head during this initial phase of recovery. Any heavy lifting that directly targets the chest muscles (e.g., push-ups, chest presses or chest flys) should be completely avoided for at least 8 weeks. The most important thing to remember when resuming any physical exercise is to pay attention to your body’s particular needs. If you don’t feel ready, or if an activity causes significant pain, you should stop until you start feeling better. _______________________ For more info about breast augmentation recovery: genderconfirmation.com/after-top-surgery-mtf/⠀ Book a consultation with Dr. Facque: genderconfirmation.com/consultation-request/ Our website: genderconfirmation.com ⠀⠀ #DrFacque #DrLey #DrMosser #DrDanielJacobs #GenderConfirmationCenter #trans #transgender #GenderAffirmingCare #TransCare #transgendersurgery #nonbinary #mtf #liposuction #breastaugmentation #mtftopsurgery
