In order to study the neural basis of motor learning, the Carey lab at the Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown has developed a split-belt treadmill for mice. In this video animation, three stages of the process are presented: 1. Tied belt - both tracks are moving at the same speed; 2. Early split-belt - one track begins to move faster than the other, causing asynchronous walking; 3. Late split-belt - the speed difference remains, but the mouse has learned to adapt its walking manner to achieve synchronisation across all four limbs.
