Mr. Multicultural Patreon web site:   / mrmulticultural   Mr. Multicultural Website: http://mrmulticultural.com NUMBER ONE: Passion Born “Leighton Rhett Radford Howe” in 1943, in Trinidad, the son of Lucille Howe, a teacher, and Cipriani Howe, an Anglican Priest. He was schooled at Queen’s Royal College (QRC) in the Port of Spain, where he had won a scholarship. Following his time at Queen’s Royal College, he would move to England at the age of 18, arriving in Southampton in 1961 on the SS Antilles. He arrived with the intention to study Law, since he wanted to become, a barrister. However, after two years at Middle Temple, he left, unwilling to be a second-class citizen. It was also during this time where he became interested and involved with journalism and Black Power Politics. Due to this, he would leave England in 1969 to return to Trinidad where his uncle and mentor, the Cyril Lionel Robert James, would inspire him to combine writing with political activism. He would take up a role as an assistant editor, for Vanguard, the weekly newspaper of the Oilfields Workers Trade Union but he would only stay with the publication for a short time before going back to the UK. It was here, where his involvement with the British Black Panther Movement would begin and where he would take up the nickname ‘Darcus’, that stayed with him forever. NUMBER TWO: Compassion In 1973, Darcus established the Race Collective, where unlike a traditional political party, members were not trying to set agendas or win converts. Rather through their magazine, Race Today, they published news of grassroots campaigns in Britain and Abroad for 15 years. Among members included Leila Hassan, the deputy editor who later became his wife, Dub Poet Linton Kwesi Johnson, a member of the Mangrove nine, Barbara Beese and Farrukh Dhondy, who was the commissioning editor of Channel 4 Television from 1984. The group would provide support when female Asian workers, went on strike at the Grunswick film processing laboratories in 1976 in Willesden. In the same year when the Bengali Housing Action Group provided an organisational basis for squatting in vacant properties in Tower Hamlets, the group would show their support, by creating the largest squat, in Europe that year. NUMBER THREE: Resilience His acts against racism and inequality often saw him butting heads with the British law and more importantly the police, and no stranger to being arrested, for demonstrations which would turn violet when police intervened. This came to a head, during a their demonstration against racism in Notting Hill, that turned violent after Police had attacked the demonstrators, during their march. NUMBER FOUR: Discipline Before the Black Panther Movement, Darcus founded the Black Eagles who would publish the Black “Dimension magazine”. The publication would include demands such as decent housing for all migrants, the release of political prisoners and the demand that Black People who were accused of crimes, should be made up of a trial exclusively of Black People. Articles in the Black Dimension, also discussed the aspirations of recent migrants, and the realities they would faced when arriving in the UK. On top of this, the magazine would also show how British Black radical saw their struggle, against white domination as per of an international movement. With many being inspired by the fight for civil rights, and the pushbacks against colonialism, and racism in Africa, the US and Asia. NUMBER FIVE: Risk-Taking Earlier in 2021, Darcus would be one of the individuals on the Local Heroes Banner at the Tate Library through the Local Heroes Initiative. The initiative was launched by the Friends of the Tate Library in 2017, to ensure Brixton as a community, recognises and appreciates those who served the community during their lifetime and continue to be role models for current and future generations today.
