December 4, 2014 What is the essential difference between genocide and crimes against humanity? Philippe Sands, a barrister and expert in international law appearing before the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court, discusses the relationship between these legal concepts in the context of the Nuremberg Trial, the Rwandan genocide, and the Bosnian genocide case. Does the “pressure” to “indict for genocide” instead of crimes against humanity advance human rights? Professor Sands addresses whether the concept of genocide effectively advances human rights, questioning if the “pressure” to “indict for genocide” rather than crimes against humanity truly brings victims justice. This dialogue was co-sponsored by Columbia University’s Human Rights Institute, Center on Global Governance, Institute for the Study of Human Rights, and Society of International Law.
