NUH ophthalmologist, Dr Chris Lim answers questions about the diagnosis of dry eye disease (also known as dry eye syndrome or tear film dysfunction). It’s a common condition in Singapore in which eyes either do not produce enough tears or the tears produced are of poor quality. Diagnosis process includes: Medical history taking by doctor Physical examination with slit-lamp (a type of microscope) Schirmer’s test is used to determine whether the eye produces enough tears to keep it moist. The test is performed by placing filter paper inside the lower lid of the eyes. Meibography is performed to detect possible Meibomian gland dysfunction and to monitor their correct functioning, since they are responsible for producing the lipid layer that forms part of the tear film and whose function is to ensure the stability of the tear, prevent its evaporation and thus protect the surface of the eye. Photographic analysis of tear meniscus height Video analysis of tear film stability Corneal epithelial mapping uses a specialised machine to measure the thickness of the epithelial layer of the cornea to assist in the diagnosis and monitoring of dry eye disease.
