ORIGINAL BROADCAST DATE: 31st March 2017 On the 31st March 1997, the first episode, Ned's Bicycle, premiered on Children's BBC introducing four strange but cuddly colourful characters Tinky-Winky, Dipsy, Laa-Laa & Po to young audiences for the first time ever. Teletubbies, a staple of Ragdoll Productions programming, was a phenomenal success, winning BAFTAs and broke new ground in children's television. It has been translated into sold in 120 countries and broadcast all across the world. Although production ceased in 1999, new episodes of the futuristic foursome didn't finish airing on our small screens until 2001, by which point Ragdoll Productions had filmed a catalogue of 365 episodes - one for every day of the year! Teletubbies has spawned countless VHS/DVDs and merchandise and even made it into popular culture. The show had a popular 10th anniversary celebration in 2007 and has been repeated on the BBC ever since. Since 2015, DHX Media, the new owners of Teletubbies, have rebooted the show in HD with brand-new episodes, starring an all-star cast of Daniel Rigby, Jim Broadbent & Jane Horrocks, for a new generation of audiences and has proved yet again successful. Twenty years later, since that first broadcast in '97, this programme by Witness for BBC World Service looks at the impact and legacy that the Teletubbies have left with young audiences, the cast & crew and the general public. In an interview with Pui Fan Lee (Po), she recounts her time on the original series, finding her character's voice, filming on a farm in Warwickshire, her opinions on the controversy surrounding the show's "Eh-oh"-isms, and how her career has been since moving on from wearing a red costume in the middle of Warwickshire. Whether you love them or loathe them, over the hills and far away, Teletubbies has brought joy to millions of toddlers and children and looks set to continue its legacy for another 20 years more...
