I Am River | A Short Film Inspired by the St. Lawrence River I Am River is a children’s book written by Ema Gelber and Naomi Flis, told from the perspective of the St. Lawrence River as it narrates its own story. Through this voice, the book invites young readers to connect with the river as a living, interconnected entity, tracing its formation from melting glaciers, its diverse ecozones, and the ways human activity can both care for and harm it - ultimately calling on children to treat the river with kindness and respect. Inspired by the book, I Am River was adapted into a short film celebrating the St. Lawrence River and the life it sustains. Seen through the eyes of a young girl discovering the river and its ecosystems, the film explores the deep relationship between humans and nature. Filmed across Montréal, Charlevoix, and Tadoussac, the film brings the pages of the book to life, capturing flowing waters, wildlife, and moments of coexistence that remind us why this river matters. From vast landscapes to intimate encounters, I Am River invites viewers to slow down, listen, and reconnect with the natural world. In this collaborative short film, the St. Lawrence River once again becomes our narrator - a living presence reflecting on the life it nurtures, the beauty it holds, and the growing weight of human impact on its waters. Blending visual storytelling with poetic narration, the film invites youth to see the river not simply as a body of water, but as a being with a voice - one calling for care, respect, and stewardship for generations to come. ------------------------------ Storybook written by: Ema Gelber & Naomi Flis Directed & filmed by: Julia Lespine In collaboration with Ocean Wise through the “Ocean Action Grant” & Atta Society Filmed across Québec, Canada Huge thank you to Du Fleuve & Pêcheries Charlevoix for their collaboration.
