Today I would like to talk about this. When we say vaginal agenesis ,we mean the vagina is either totally absent, or partially formed in utero. Some of these patients may have additional problems related to the urinary system, heart or skeletal system. Concomitantly the uterus may either be totally absent or formed as a rudimentary small structure. Sometimes when a baby is born the first physical examination in the labour room may show that the anus or vagina does not have a patent orifice in addition, sometimes when there’s a suspect for a urinary problem, some imaging studies may be done and the condition may be diagnosed on these images. Apart from this, when a girl around 15 years of age develops normal, secondary sex characteristics, such as breast growth and axillary hair formation, but does not have any menstruation, one may consider this diagnosis. When there is a suspect of vaginal agenesis, several imaging studies, such as ultrasonography and MRI and blood test for hormones and chromosomes may help in definite diagnosis.
