Mallet compound No. 110 steaming through the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota on the Black Hills Central Railroad, running between Hill City and Keystone. This 2-6-6-2T was built for Weyerhaeuser Timber Company in August 1928, and after many years as a static display in Utah, was restored for service in 2001. In this video No. 110 is seen during its second week of operation after its extensive restoration, which took two years. We start out on Tin Mill Hill as the 110 works its way out of Hill City, and then we see the locomotive in various locations out on the line as it heads towards Keystone. The last mile of track into Keystone was washed out by a flood in 1972, and it wasn't repaired until May of 2001, so 110 is traversing brand-new track as it approaches downtown. The engine runs rear-end-first on the return trip to Hill City. The engineer seen on these runs is the late Jerry Drager. I have other videos on YouTube of the 110 (from 2006) but these first trips stand out in my mind as being very special. I remember playing on this locomotive as a child when it was displayed in Heber City, Utah, not thinking that it would ever run again. It was a real treat to see the engine in action for the first time. Prior to this, the last time 110 had run was in 1967 on the Rayonier line in Washington State.
