Dupuytren's contracture is a hand condition that can occur in one or both hands. Dupuytren's contracture is caused by a buildup of collagen that forms a rope-like cord beneath the skin of the palm. As a progressive condition, it may worsen over time and may eventually limit your ability to move or straighten your fingers. XIAFLEX is an FDA-approved nonsurgical treatment for adults with Dupuytren's contracture when a "cord" can be felt. XIAFLEX is injected into the collagen "cord* that is causing the contracture. After injection, the XIAFLEX enzymes are thought to attach to the collagen that makes up the rope-like cord in the palm, unwinding the collagen and eventually, breaking it down. The mechanism of action of XIAFLEX in Dupuytren's contracture is not fully understood. XIAFLEX can cause serious side effects such as tendon rupture or ligament damage.
