It’s the end of the season, and that means tackling one of the most dreaded jobs on the farm — plastic mulch anddrip tape removal. After the crops are harvested and mowed down, we’ve got to pull up all the mulch films and drip irrigation lines (aka drip tape) so we can prep the fields for next year. In this video, we use our Challenger 1800 plastic mulch lifter to split the biodegradable mulch films, unbury the conventional mulch edges, and make it easier to pull up by hand. Then we pull up the drip tape for disposal before disking and chisel plowing the fields to get them ready for next season. We still use conventional plastic for long-season crops like peppers and tomatoes, but most of our other beds are covered in biodegradable mulch made from starches that breaks down naturally in the soil. By the time next year’s planting season rolls around, the Bio Gold 2 film is mostly gone — eaten up by the soil microbes. It’s a dirty, tiring job — but a necessary one to close out another growing year and reset the farm for spring planting. 👇 Thanks for watching and supporting the channel!
