We are in the process of improving our off grid water system in order to meet the needs of our recently installed polytunnel. With food prices set to soar, we decided to prioritise the installation of a polytunnel over the much needed expansion of our off grid rain water collection and filtration system. Now that the polytunnel is up and the plants are growing, it is a race against time to improve our water supply in order to ensure we can keep the plants watered during the hotter summer months. This week we completed the installation of a new water pipe and tap for the polytunnel. For now it means we can use a hose rather than repeatedly trekking across our property with a watering can. In the future we will use it to supply our irrigation system. As we move into the summer, we are looking to install a new and much larger water tank to store the rain water we collect. In order to secure a constant water supply we are also planning to dig a shallow well. However, we are balancing this project alongside building more raised beds and growing as much food as possible in the hope of supplying ourselves and our families with home-grown fruit and vegetables.
