Close-up of burn patients hands doing exercise STORYLINE In a small room on the fourth floor of Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, some of the United States' most severely injured soldiers come together for physical therapy. Their burns are horrific, their stories heroic, and at once heartbreaking. "A lot of times we'll have an injury so severe everyone's thinking the same thing 'maybe we should let this guy go, put him out of his misery and suffering,'" said Dr. Kevin Chung. "But we don't do that, especially with the young guys because we've seen miracles." Miracles like Sergeant Shilo Harris. He was injured in an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) blast on 19 February this year in Baghdad and was one of only two survivors, in his five-member unit. "I have four children. I want to be healthy so I can go play with them, we can go to the waterpark, go hiking, camping, fishing, hunting," he said. Five months after he was injured in Iraq, Sergeant Harris is a success story. Not only because of how far he's come, but simply because he's alive. "Many of these patients with multiple organ system injuries would not have survived before," said Dr. Evan Renz. In Desert Storm it took nearly 12 days for a burn victim to get back to the United States to receive specialised care. In Vietnam it was closer to 17 days. Kathreyn Harris, wife of Sergeant Harris, knows how lucky she is to have her husband.
