14 October 2023, Shenzhen. Incredibly clear weather, light almost translucent. Morning (8–9 a.m.) and afternoon (12–2 p.m.), a light walk near my lodging. Route: Chuangye Road — Houhai Avenue — Dengliang Road — Houhaibin Road. Casual footage by the filmmaker of Masters in the Forbidden City and Every Treasure Tells a Story. ——— This area feels entirely new. Houhai is a core district in Nanshan, part of the famed “most innovative street” Yuehai Subdistrict. CNOOC Tower, Alibaba HQ, China Resources‘ “Spring Bamboo” nearby. Towers, glass facades, wide roads—all brand‑new. But beyond the newness: slowness. Calm. ——— Not the fast‑paced Shenzhen I remember. Maybe it’s the weekend. Dengliang Road: few people—joggers, dog walkers, someone staring into space at a café. Under the trees along Houhaibin Road: picnics, people just sky‑gazing. 2023: Shenzhen‘s常住 population hit a record 17.79 million—highest growth among first‑tier cities. People still flock here to strive. But weekend afternoons? Quiet. ——— “In Shenzhen, progress too slow is still regress.” That saying once circulated. Lately, though, talk has emerged: Is Shenzhen losing its edge? Dengliang Road is undergoing a gentle renewal. As a core RBD road, its lighting design follows a “low‑impact” philosophy—unobtrusive, blending with the landscape. North of Dengliang, Houhai Village‘s urban renewal plan promises nearly 284,000 sq m of housing—but it took over a decade just to get approved. Slowing down—maybe not so bad. ——— Where do we begin to understand a city? With its speed—that “slow progress is regress” slogan, office lights burning all night. With its slowness—empty Dengliang Road on a weekend, people under trees doing nothing. With its newness—sunlight glinting off Houhaibin Road’s glass towers.
