After 2 months, a few events, and even walking TWO blocks in Downtown Dallas the red soles HAVE held up! The 'training' that I've been doing definitely has helped me feel more comfortable walking in these. The 'sole protectors' I kept referencing were the ball foot cushions. I haven't bought those, but I don't really feel like I need them anymore after all the 'training'.
