In VSA Futures Writing classes teach young writers to develop a critical eye and flex essay-writing muscles with weekly assignments. Their teaching staff teaches kids phonics to help comprehend letter correspondences to reading. Teachers focus on strengthening vocabulary to help children communicate and write more formally and teach grammar to allow them to express themselves fully and clearly. They begin by studying model texts in literary analysis, opinion writing, and personal narrative before tackling their own drafts, writing thoughtful essays on “What makes a hero?”, arguing persuasively for new education systems, and unpacking the character development in a myth. Over the course of summer writing sessions, students prepare for the increased rigor of their Fall 2021 writing classes and equip themselves with the tools and strategies for in-depth writing.
