From the top of Acatenango, I witness my first volcanic eruptions from neighboring Volcán de Fuego — ash and explosions lighting up the sky as I recover with sweet bread and hot chocolate, taking in a moment I’ll never forget. But the journey isn’t over. What follows is the brutal hike to Volcán de Fuego itself, where I see my first eruption with visible lava — raw, powerful, and humbling in a way no camera can fully capture. In this moment, standing on an active volcano, I tattoo myself — permanently marking one of the most intense experiences of my life. The final challenge is the return hike back to base camp on Acatenango — the most physically punishing part of the entire journey, done on empty legs, in the dark, with nothing left but willpower.
