Sidewalk Studios’ displays ahead of NATO assembly 2025/"The Funk Box Experience." (Exhibit photos at the bottom of the page). The definition of NATO, or the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, is a military alliance of 32 countries from Europe and North America. Its primary purpose is to safeguard the freedom and security of its members through both political and military means. The alliance is based on the principle of collective defense, meaning an attack on one member is considered an attack on all. The NATO Parliamentary Assembly imminent, several vacant storefronts throughout Dayton have been adorned with artwork. Known as “Sidewalk Studios,” the temporary exhibit features work by 14 artists from Dayton, each of whom have pooled their talents to create a visual showcase on and around North Main Street. The effort is a project organized by the Downtown Dayton Partnership, Culture Works, the International Peace Museum, and the City of Dayton. “We’re fortunate to have such talented Dayton Region artists bringing energy and color to Downtown Dayton’s storefronts as we prepare to welcome the NATO Parliamentary Assembly,” said Culture Works President & CEO, Lisa Hanson. The projects each centered around themes of Dayton’s history and innovation, arts scene, and longstanding legacy of peace. “These art installations honor Dayton’s history of peace and innovation. They are a welcome addition to the City’s preparations for the NATO Parliamentary Assembly and for the continued enjoyment of the community thereafter,” said Congressman Mike Turner.“The DDP is thrilled to partner with them and create a welcoming, engaging Downtown for both NATO PA delegates and local residents, workers, and visitors,” said Kristina Scott, Vice President of Strategy for the Downtown Dayton Partnership. Several artists will be available to speak on their pieces on Saturday, May 31 at “Local Love: Art Stroll & Business Blitz” at 225 N. Main St. from 3-6 p.m. Our organization (TheFunkCenter),believes that, in addition to honoring the history of Funk music, music education for future generations may be TheFunkCenter’s most important mission — one that will create a special legacy for the community. TheFunkCenter, will strive to provide a unique environment for all, however, a special focus will be for children of all ages, abilities, and experience to feel free to imagine, create and welcome the arts into their lives. “TheFunkCenter’s mission will be to teach young people to play instruments, understand what it takes to work in all aspects of the performing arts, learn about the role music plays in creativity, critical thinking skills and self-discipline, and to improve their deductive reasoning skills in reading, math and science,” Webb said. Each of these areas is crucial, he added, to helping students face the challenges life presents as they approach adulthood.
