Responding to concerns raised by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Ayariga argued that the Constitution does not mandate specific ministerial portfolios, except for the Attorney General. He cautioned that legislating a dedicated Minister for National Security would tie the hands of any sitting President. According to him, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) had promised to downsize government and reduce the number of ministers upon assuming office. As part of that commitment, the Minister for National Security portfolio was among those scrapped. Ayariga stressed that the fundamental objective of the bill is to revise existing legislation and formally abolish the position of Minister for National Security, streamlining the structure of the country’s security governance.
