Ironic! I had no idea that today is the day of the croatian flag. Interesting. Some context regarding the tricolor: In the Habsburg Monarchy, individual crown lands had their own coats of arms, but not flags (edit: actually we do have a medival flag, a white-red checkered flag). Based on the colors of the common coat of arms, the national tricolor of red-white-blue was created in 1848. Throughout history, the colors of the Croatian countries' flags and coats of arms have most often included red, white, and blue. In the year of 1848, war with the atheist Revolutionaries was expected, and the need for a single national flag was recognized. The Tricolor was immediately used as a common symbol of the nation by the Zagreb National Guard. A little over a month later, on June 5, 1848, it was officially used for the first time. The flag became official at the ceremonial enthronement of Josip Jelačić as the Croatian Banus. Jelačić entered Zagreb in a magnificent procession. At the head of the procession flew the tricolor with the combined coats of arms of the Kingdom of Croatia, Dalmatia and Slavonia. The Tricolor became an inseparable part of our national identity since the Croatian counterrevolution of that year. The installation flag of Ban Jelačić was the first officially used Croatian tricolor. I thing this story wraps it all up, I've covered everything up and with that said..
