It borders with Durban North to the south and Mount Edgecombe to the west. The town, located on the Indian Ocean coast, lies on a large ridge overlooking the ocean, gently sloping from uMhlanga Rocks along the coastline towards uMhlanga Ridge at the top of the ridge. The Umhlanga Rocks Lighthouse was completed in 1954 and stands on the beach at Umhlanga. It is unmanned and active. The round concrete tower is white below and red above. The lighthouse is 21 m high and has a focal plane of 25 m above the high water mark. The tower has a 600,000 CD electric light, which is mounted on a rotating system and can be seen 24 nautical miles away, as well as a fixed red light. The red light enables ships outside Durban Harbor to monitor their position. If the red light can be seen, the ship is too close to shore. The Whalebone Pier: This actually is the stormwater outlet for the area, which has affectionately been named the Whalebone Pier. Walk along the pier for lovely views up and down the coast as well as back towards uMhlanga. There are beautiful works of mosaic art designed originally by architect Jane du Randt which are like decorative Zulu warrior shields.
