Anne Charpentier, director of the Insectarium, presents the Insectarium's Metamorphosis: "I became director of the Insectarium about 10 years ago. I have quite a bit of experience opening museums, which is good because the Insectarium is a fabulous project. With this Metamorphosis, we’re creating the insectarium of tomorrow, an Insectarium for the 21st century, while honouring its founder, notary Georges Brossard. The current Insectarium is 28 years old. It was very innovative. The first in North America when it was founded. But museology has evolved since and the Insectarium needs to also. So this was an opportunity to renovate. My role in transforming the Insectarium is like that of a conductor, except that I have to compose as well as direct the team. It’s about providing guidance and a vision for the museum. Then, reiterating that vision because, as the project progresses, our internal specialists, entomologists, educators all get involved, then architects, engineers and others who may not know about insects. So, we need to ensure everyone stays focused on our concept, and with each step, we keep the project moving forward, losing nothing along the way when there are setbacks, for example. Because large projects like this always have some. A project like the Metamorphosis of the Insectarium is a long process. We conducted many ideation and brainstorming sessions. How could we engage visitors? That’s the museum concept. Next, we laid out the elements of the future museum. We held an international competition to select the architects. We have a great team of architects, re-imagining the museum. The new Insectarium will integrate very well into the Jardin botanique. In terms of architecture, it's like a big greenhouse. But, in the basement, we’ll invite visitors to experience life as an insect, to see the world like a fly, exploring the chambers like an underground world. Two elements of the future insectarium will particularly stand out. A magnificent dome-shaped space, a sort of sanctuary to highlight our great insect collections. Here, visitors will feel like an ant trying to get out of its nest. The other element is an immersive space, called the main greenhouse. Lots of butterflies, of course, and other insects wandering about. We know that, for visitors, insects are quite remote, like aliens. So, to better understand the insect world, we want them to experience briefly what it’s like to be an insect, by exploring some underground galleries." The Insectarium will be closing on March 11, 2019, and an all-new museum will open its doors. Get ready to see the world as insects do! ****** Pour plus de renseignements // For more informations : Web http://espacepourlavie.ca/ Facebook / espacepourlavie Instagram / espacepourlavie Twitter / espacepourlavie Youtube / espacepourlavie
