This Model 3 (production 10/18) could originally Autopark ONLY in empty perpendicular parking spaces it could identify between two parked cars in adjacent spaces. It would fail to find a valid available target for the Autopark function even if there were two empty spaces between parked cars, or in most other circumstances (though it would sometimes treat other physical objects as valid substitutes for a parked car). This was reportedly because Tesla used only ultrasonic sensors to perform Autopark tasks. The maneuvers in this video were performed to test that this Model 3 now utilizes "Vision-only" sensing for Autopark. Indeed, the car can now successfully park in a space based solely on painted markings on the road surface, with no adjacent automobiles or other physical features necessary for the system to identify a valid target space. This is convincing evidence that there had indeed been the predicted change from ultrasonic to vision-based sensing for Autopark. The Model 3's current Tesla system software is v2022.4.5.3 - I did not note the version change which brought about the Vision-only functionality. Tesla is transitioning away from using short-wavelength forward radar and ultrasonic sensors, claiming that they can be more effective using only the existing camera suite than attempting to correlate radar and ultrasound data with vision data. New production Teslas will supposedly no longer have the non-vision sensors installed, and it has been reported that they will no longer engage the legacy radar and ultrasound sensors with future software.
