The intersection of each pair of surfaces generates a coordinate line, and the intersection point of this three surfaces, is the origin of the coordinate system. Additionally, at each point in space the unitary vectors of the system are defined, as tangent vectors in the direction of growth of the coordinate lines at each point. When the unitary vectors intersect at right angles in all space, the system is orthogonal.
