Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints of the 17th to the 19th centuries are usually associated with one person, print designers like Hokusai or Hiroshige. However, these artists were just one part of a sophisticated industry that mass-produced prints for Japanese urban consumers. In this video, Kevin R.E. Greenwood, Joan L. Danforth Curator of Asian Art, uses examples from the Allen's renowned collection of ukiyo-e prints to introduce the different types of workers in this industry, who collaborated to create an artform now recognized throughout the world.
