Putin's Russia is negotiating again. But not from the position of strength many assume. In this BBC World Service interview, I explain why the renewed talks over Ukraine may signal something much deeper: growing strategic pressure on Russia itself. While public messaging continues to project confidence, the reality behind the scenes is far more complex. Ukraine’s sustained strikes on Russian energy infrastructure have exposed vulnerabilities that Moscow cannot easily ignore. At the same time, Russia’s economy is showing signs of strain, forcing the Kremlin to balance military objectives with economic stability. These pressures help explain why negotiations are now proceeding in stages—focused on limited agreements such as prisoner exchanges, energy security, and infrastructure protections—rather than any comprehensive peace settlement. But the fundamental problem remains unchanged. Russia and Ukraine still have irreconcilable objectives. Moscow seeks long-term political control over Ukraine’s strategic direction, while Kyiv cannot afford territorial concessions without undermining its sovereignty and future security. This makes any lasting settlement extremely difficult, even as talks continue. So what is really driving these negotiations? Is this the beginning of a genuine diplomatic shift—or simply a tactical pause in a longer confrontation?
