On July 23rd, 2020, I visited Youngstown, Ohio to shoot the variety of railroads that operated in and around the city. I started the day by chasing a northbound Youngstown & Southeastern freight train with a former Rock Island GP18 leading. Due to the trains slow speed, I managed to catch it a handful of times at spots between the Willow Crest and Cottage Grove neighborhoods of town. I then moved over to Graham in Struthers. Graham is the south end of Norfolk Southern's Hazelton Yard and has a set of G-head signals. The first train I caught at Graham was an Ohio Central job with a pair of G&W painted geeps. After that passed, a Norfolk Southern local with a former Southern Railway GP38-2 leading departed the Yard. The unit used to be a high hood, but was rebuilt with an admiral cab in 2015. Not long after he cleared, the Ohio Central job shoved back and into Hazelton Yard. I decided to go check out Brier Hill to see if any of the Ohio Central painted GP11s were operating. I was delighted to see the 8702 switching along State street. The 8702 was originally a Union Pacific GP9. It was rebuilt into a GP11 at the Illinois Central's Paducah shops and eventually found its way onto the Ohio Central in the late 90s or early 2000s. Enjoy the awesome trains of Youngstown, Ohio!
