Exclusive: Has Xi Jinping Already Lost Power? A Preview of the Two Sessions For some time now—perhaps one could say, constantly—many journalist friends and online users have been asking me: Is Xi Jinping really about to be overthrown in a coup? Is he truly on the verge of losing power? What do you think of certain prominent commentators’ claims? And so on. In fact, I have discussed this topic more than once in this column. Yet rumors and speculation never seem to die down. Those who spread falsehoods do so with great enthusiasm, those who pass them on spare no effort, and the audience keeps asking endlessly. My usual response is: If you insist on asking me, I can only tell you—it’s a rumor. The highest-level power struggles and coup conspiracies within the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) are matters of life and death, shrouded in absolute secrecy. If such intelligence were real, those spreading it wouldn’t know about it. Such affairs are known only to the key players themselves. Talking recklessly before action is suicidal—those foolish enough to do so would never be capable of orchestrating something as major as this. Personally, I wish the rumors were true—how great that would be. But reality is not the same as imagination. Replacing facts with emotions is far from wise. Due to strong demand from readers, today I will discuss this topic from an internal CCP perspective: Has Xi Jinping already lost power? What factors are challenging his political foundation? This perspective may lack sensationalism, but my discussion will be serious, responsible, and rigorous. I believe it is worth your time to read and reflect upon with me. Many people frequently ask: In China’s current political landscape, is Xi Jinping truly unshakable, or is he surrounded by crisis? On the surface, he has consolidated his control over the Party, government, and military with an “imperial” grip, eliminating term limits and purging potential rivals to achieve unprecedented personal authority. However, history shows that the more oppressive and stability-obsessed a system is, the greater the undercurrents of resistance become. When social discontent is deeply suppressed, the more explosive it will be once ignited. Moreover, in recent months, several of Xi’s close allies have fallen, and there have been major personnel shake-ups in key sectors such as the military and security apparatus. These developments have led observers to reassess: Has this seemingly invincible leader encountered significant challenges? Or, within the very fortress of his power, have cracks already begun to form?
