Hello everybody, welcome to Adventures In Beekeeping. My name is Dale and I am a first year beekeeper. Today we are going to be installing a hive top feeder. This feeder is made from cypress and was built by an Amish craftsman from Franklin, Ky that specializes in making beekeeping woodenware. I have seen hive top feeders that were similar in construction provided by other vendors. What make this feeder unique is that is made from cypress. Cypress is excellent for beekeeping woodenware because: 1. it is lighter than other woods and 2. it has it own builtin resistance to rot without any treatment. There is no need to paint it or seal it, yet it will last for year and years. Now I have been using a 4 jar hive top feeder. I have been putting in 3 or 4 jars (3 or 4 quarts) a week. The bees have been taking the sugar syrup just fine. However, setting up the jars take a few minutes so I wanted to experiment with this new feeder. What are the benefits of this feeder? 1. I can hold more than 2 gallons 2. The bees have direct access to the syrup. They do not have to work to get the syrup from a tiny hole in the jar lid. 3. It has two compartments. One can be used for wet and dry feeding. One side can be used for syrup while the other is used for pollen or something like that. What are the problems with this feeder? 1. Bees have direct access to the syrup. They can still get in trouble if they get below the float or if the float get waterlogged and sinks. 2. The beekeeper has to open the hive a bit when adding syrup. (Beekeeper come in contact with the bees.) I am interested to see what happens. Come along for the adventure. Have a great day. God bless.
