Opened by chef-owner Shimao, who spent nearly two decades working in French and German restaurants in Tokyo, Casserole represents a homecoming and a commitment to sharing carefully crafted European-style comfort food with the local community. The atmosphere inside Casserole is warm and inviting, reminiscent of a countryside home in southern France. Wooden tables, checkered tablecloths, and large windows with light curtains give the space a rustic charm. A unique touch is the Peter Rabbit theme that runs subtly through the décor—napkins, plates, and even wall hangings feature the beloved character, making the setting appealing to both adults and children. The restaurant seats around 46 people, including a few counter seats, and offers ample parking for up to 40 cars. It’s also easily accessible on foot from Takaoka Station, just about a 10-minute walk away. One of the most popular dishes at Casserole is the special hamburg steak. What sets it apart is the chef’s use of sausage-making techniques—learned during his time in German kitchens—to prepare the wagyu beef patty. The result is a juicy interior with a crisp breadcrumb-coated exterior, pan-seared and then oven-finished. The dish is served with a choice of sauces: mustard, tomato, or curry. The mustard sauce is particularly well-regarded, made with two types of Dijon mustard, white wine, and cream, offering a rich but tangy profile that pairs beautifully with the meat. Diners can even choose two sauces if they can’t decide. During lunch hours, this dish is typically served with salad, bread or rice, and a drink or dessert for a very reasonable price of around ¥1,210, with a small upcharge for the set menu. Another standout item is the borscht-style stew. Adapted to Japanese tastes, this hearty dish simmers beef and seven kinds of root vegetables for over two hours. It has the soothing quality of dishes like nikujaga or tonjiru, making it both nourishing and deeply satisfying. The menu also includes a delightful pear tart, a house dessert that has been a staple for years. Featuring a flaky crust, custard, and gently baked pear slices, it strikes the right balance of sweetness and texture. It’s available on its own or as part of a dessert set. Pricing at Casserole is accessible. Lunch sets start around ¥1,200, while dinner ranges from ¥2,000 and up. Full-course and party menus are available, making the restaurant suitable for gatherings and celebrations. Drink packages can also be added to party plans. Casserole is particularly family-friendly, offering high chairs and kid-friendly utensils. While there’s no separate kids' menu, the flexible nature of the dishes—especially the hamburg steak and pizzas—makes it easy for families to share. Casserole has become a local favorite, often filled to capacity during lunch hours. With its thoughtful menu, inviting space, and the chef’s evident dedication to quality and comfort, it’s more than just a meal—it’s a culinary experience with heart. Reservations are recommended to secure a spot at this well-loved Takaoka institution. @TastyWaterOM / @tastywaterom
