On Saturday July 7th 2012, the Australian Railway Historical Society organized a Suburban Mystery Tour which would travel to different parts of the Queensland Rail network. This was the first tour for AC16 221A after a year long stint in the Ipswich Railway Workshops for mechanical repairs. The train first traveled to Bethania on the Beenleigh line. Soon after departure for our 2nd unknown destination, the locomotive suffered a failure of one of its snifter valves. A snifter valve is an anti-vacuum valve which works by allowing air into the cylinders when the regulator is shut to break the vacuum which is created when the locomotive is coasting along. The train was able to limp into Kuraby station where we waited for Diesel backup to arrive in the form of QR National 2490H. Once attached the train set off, eventually arriving at the Normanby Yards where the steam locomotive was removed from the train and towed back to Mayne Yard. The rest of the journey was completed by a diesel, where we traveled out to Pinkenba and around the balloon loop before arriving back into the City.
