Convict Fence

The Canning River Convict fence, a notable structure seen in the Canning River between Salter Point and Shelley Bridge. It was constructed by convicts in 1866 during the Convict era in Western Australia (1850-1868). It is associated with the convict superviser Henry Passmore and the timber Miller, Ben Mason. The fence was used to assist the navigation of barges carrying sawn timber from the Mason-Bird Timber Company’s mill at Mason’s Landing. The convicts drove Jarrah stakes into the river bed and weaved Casurina and Wattle branches between them. They then walked through the water chest deep shovelling silt back over the fence to deepen the channel.
