In this episode, we sit down with Development Economist, Phelisa Nkomo, to explore the "crux" of the South African economic survival: the Care Economy. While traditional metrics like GDP often overlook the labor of raising children, caring for the elderly, and maintaining households, we discuss with Nkomo how this "invisible" work is the backbone of the national economy. We look into her extensive experience from the Commission for Gender Equality to the Women’s Economic Assembly to discuss why South Africa must transition from treating care as a private "women's burden" to a public economic priority. Why this conversation matters: With South Africa heading toward significant global leadership roles (including the G20 presidency) it is vital to discuss how the country can lead the Global South in reimagining an economy where "everyone counts." It is important to look into challenging the neoliberal status quo, arguing for a "feminist reparation" that includes land, education, and the formal recognition of care as work.
