Urban weather. What is it, why does it matter, who cares, how much does it cost, and can we improve it? In this talk, professor Vladimir Jankovic tells a story of urban wind paths and the research behind their design. Known as kaze-no-michi in Japan, wind paths are built to ventilate the city, create social gravity spots, and reduce urban heat islands. Scientists use computational fluid dynamics to optimise the impact of a city's morphology on local winds that, in theory, can create a "thermostat" with which to regulate longer-term climatic parameters in a small area. Vladimir Jankovic is a reader of atmospheric sciences at the University of Manchester.
