SunoikisisDC Digital Approaches to Cultural Heritage: Session 6 Date: Thursday 26th February 2026. 16:00-17:30 GMT. Convenors: Paula Granados García (British Museum), Nicole Iu (University of Ottawa), Paula Rauhala (RiddoDuottarMuseat) This session discusses some of the responsibilities and sensibilities that come with working with cultural heritage from outside our own historical settings, especially the heritage of living Indigenous cultures or from regions whose local populations tend to be underrepresented in the scholarly study and publication of their archaeology and material culture. We introduce the CARE Principles (https://www.gida-global.org/care) for Indigenous Data Governance (Collective benefit; Authority to control; Responsibility; Ethics), with a reminder that the study of classical antiquity is not insulated from such ethical concerns. Specific issues will be highlighted through case studies including Indigenous archaeology in Canada and the Endangered Material Knowledge Programme (https://emkp.org/) at the British Museum. An exercise involving surveying digital humanities approaches to indigenous knowledges in the light of the CARE Principles will be suggested.
