The Shape of Things – The Dick Brewer Story chronicles the colorful and controversial, legendary surfboard designer Dick Brewer will hold its Southern California premiere at the storied La Paloma surf theater in Encinitas Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, the 17th, 18th and 19th of October. Winner of the Maui Film Festival and the Honolua Surf Film Festival “Audience Choice Awards”, it’s a story not to be missed. Arguably the most influential surfboard shaper of in the 1960’s and 1970’s, Dick Brewer has often been called the father of the modern-day surfboard. He changed the design of surfing equipment not once, not twice, but three times in his 50 year career as a trailblazer, with all the notorious tales that have until now remained just rumored legends. Brewer’s designs have been interpreted, modified, and often copied through the gifted hands of shapers on every coast and in every decade since the 1960’s. He mentored, taught, and inspired dozens the world’s top shapers. Today, his rails, his rockers, and bottom are intrinsic to surfboard design. Directed and edited with the skill of a lifelong cinematographer Bob Campi, this biopic captures the rise, fall, and ultimate redemption of visionary who changed the world of surfing forever. that was a trailblazer throughout his career. The filmmakers tell his story with phenomenal cinematography and archival footage coupled with this retro soundtrack, will take you back to the era where surfers and board designers redefined what riding a wave could be. DIRECTOR: Bob Campi is a Three-time Emmy award winning cinematographer, and the executive producer who produced, wrote, and directed “The Shape of Things.” As an executive producer of several feature films and award-winning shorts, he’s currently in pre-production producing the feature film Tough Sledding, a bio pic chronicling the 2002 Gold Medal triumph of United States Paralympic Sled Hockey Team. SCREENWRITER: Jim Kempton - Executive Director for the California Surf Museum. A former Editor and Publisher of Surfer Magazine, Billabong USA’s Director of Media, and Marketing Director for TransWorld Publishing, Jim Kempton wrote Surfing the Manual, a book on the history of surfing told through the performance techniques of the world’s best surfers. He served as the Manager of the Surfrider Foundation Advisory Board, as well as the board of directors for the San Onofre Foundation and Surfing America, the National Governing Body of the sport. A world traveler who has surfed in over 20 countries, he wrote and edited a book on the history of surfing at San Onofre. His career includes stints as the Director of the Quiksilver Crossing, Vice President of Content for Hard Cloud Boardsports internet portal, and President of the San Clemente Historical Society.
