Alexander T. Anton, South Dakota State Historical Society, Archaeological Research Center Abstract: High-resolution LiDAR DEMs and hillshades are a useful resource in identifying archaeological features, like indigenous burial mounds and remains of the walls of historic forts, and archaeologically significant landforms, like terraces. Pre-processed LiDAR DEMs (TIFFs)are now available through the USGS’s LiDAR Explorer, as well as through various state government websites, that have the potential to provide nearly complete high-resolution DEM coverage of almost all of the counties in South Dakota. However, in spite of this data being available, organizations that provide archaeological services in South Dakota have often forgone using publicly available LiDAR data for cultural resources reviews because of inefficiencies involved in converting the available data into a usable format. Through building a statewide set of countywide 1m-resolution DEMs and hillshades, staff at the Archaeological Research Center developed techniques for generating large LiDAR datasets rapidly using Python Scripting.
