In Technical Drawing, it is possible to divide a straight line into a given number of equal parts. That is what we are going to do in today's class. So get your drawing instruments and materials and draw with me. To divide a line into a given number of equal parts, we need to follow these simple steps: 1. Draw any given line AB with your ruler. We go to our drawing board and draw line AB and label it accordingly. 2. Draw line AC at any convenient angle to line AB. So back to the board, we have drawn line AB already, so now we draw a line AC at a convenient angle to line AB. 3. Step off along line AC nine divisions. These may be of any convenient length but equal. So we’re going to step off 9 points. Stepping off means marking nine points along line AC. NOTE: In this class, we will divide line AB into 9 equal parts. So back to the board, we’ve drawn line AB and we have also drawn line AC at a convenient angle to AB. Now we take our pair of compasses and with a convenient radius begin the marking off of the points on line AC. So we mark off 9 points. Beginning from A, use A as centre and cut an arc along AC. The arc is labelled 1. With arc 1 as centre and with the same radius, cut another arc and label it 2. Repeat this process till you have cut nine arcs along AC. 4. Join the last number to point B. Next, use a set square positioned on a ruler to draw lines parallel to this line from the other numbers. So on the board, we join point 9 to point B with a straight line. Next we position the set square and ruler and draw parallel lines to line 9B from points 8,7,6,5,4,3,2 and 1. We have now divided line AC into 9 equal parts.
