The legendary Roland TR 707 The Roland TR-707 Rhythm Composer, released in 1985, was Roland’s first fully digital drum machine and a sibling to the iconic TR-909. It featured 15 digitally sampled drum sounds, including kicks, snares, toms, cymbals, and handclaps, all with a distinctive lo-fi charm due to its 8-bit and 6-bit resolution samples. Unlike its analog predecessors like the TR-808, the 707 used real recordings of acoustic drums, giving it a punchier, more realistic sound for the era. What made the TR-707 especially beloved was its tight MIDI and DIN sync capabilities, making it a favorite for syncing with other gear in both studio and live setups. It also had individual outputs for each drum sound and a classic step-sequencer interface that made programming rhythms intuitive and fun. As for artists—this little box has left its mark across genres: Aphex Twin and Squarepusher used it in experimental electronic and IDM tracks. Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel incorporated it into their '80s pop productions. Marshall Jefferson and other early house pioneers leaned on it for its crisp hi-hats and claps. Even Nine Inch Nails tapped into its gritty digital textures for industrial vibes. It may not have the cult status of the TR-808, but the TR-707 carved out its own legacy—especially in house, techno, and synth-pop circles.
