MAP FORUM - 22 February 2022 Rediscovering the Women Artists of Bologna Early modern Bologna had more women artists than any other Italian city of the period: at least 68 from the 15th through the 18th centuries, including painters, sculptors, printmakers, embroiderers, and disegnatrici. Bolognese artiste femminili were also remarkably successful, with many receiving public commissions and specializing in history painting. With its venerable university, widespread interest in collecting the works of local women artists, and unusually sympathetic local biographers, Bologna offered some advantages to its female practitioners, and its archival traditions also provide some advantages to the scholars who study them. Touching on a selection of well-known and less well-known figures, this lecture will also examine the various challenges in studying women artists, archival and otherwise. Babette Bohn, professor of art history at Texas Christian University and an award-winning teacher, has published widely on Italian -and particularly Bolognese- art, with books on Ludovico Carracci, Guido Reni, and Federico Barocci, among others. Her current scholarship examines women artists, and her book, Women Artists, Their Patrons, and Their Publics in Early Modern Bologna, was published in 2021 by the Pennsylvania State University Press. Professor Bohn’s research has been supported by grants and fellowships from the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts in Washington D.C., the Villa I Tatti in Florence, NEH, American Council of Learned Societies, and Renaissance Society of America.
