On Monday 28th of January 2019, the first electric passenger train commenced service on the London Overground Line between Barking and Gospel Oak. Three Class 378 Units will operate on the line whilst Class 172 DMU are gradually withdrawn from the line. All 378s are 5-cars in lengths but due to shorter platforms at some stations along the GOBLIN, alterations had to be made to shorten 3 units by 1 car. Originally the decision to withdraw the 172s came as preparations were made to introduce their new successor the Class 710s, though due to various faults, their introduction has been delayed. To avoid the risk of no trains before a late roll out of these new EMUs, Class 378s have been brought to in to fill in the gap. Making these the first electric trains to operate in passenger service on the line.
