The ischiorectal fossa of which there are two are two triangular shaped spaces situated inferior to the bilateral aspect of the rectum and the anus. Being shaped somewhat like prisms, the ischiorectal fossae therefore have some aspects which are rather prismatic - namely, the apex, the roof, the lateral walls, the medial walls, and the floor. The apex of this space is directed antermedially towards the pubic symphysis. This apex is where the levator ani and obturator internus muscles intersect. The roof of one of the ischiorectal fossae is formed by the obliquely coursing levator ani muscle, and the inferior fascia of the pelvic diaphragm.
