This human disease is caused when a cat that is infected with the bacteria Bartonella henselae enters into the human blood stream by either a cat scratch or a cat bite. A cat gets this bacteria from fleas who carry it in their body. When a cat is infected with fleas they scratch at the fleas and the dead flea body parts with the bacteria stay on the cat nail beds or stuck to the cats teeth. Human symptoms start off with a local papule and regional lymphadenitis (lymph node swelling) and a fever. The most common area that people get scratched is on their hands and then the axillary or arm pit lymph nodes swell up and the human gets lethargic and develops a fever. Treatment for humans is with local heat application, pain medications and antibiotics.
